Description:

West Africa, late 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a unique, beautiful necklace made of heavy bronze rings bound together with red leather (probably a later restringing, although they are not recent). There is a small cross with some of the original red leather coiled around its center at the bottom of the necklace. Jewelery in West Africa serves a purpose beyond being purely decorative, often indicating social status. For example, in Mali, older Dogon men wear large bronze rings as a sign of status. Size (full length): 29" L (73.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex-James Bernard Byrnes collection. Mr. Byrnes was the first curator of LACMA.
