Description:

New Zealand, 19th cent. “Carved side uprights of a doorway or window opening. Whakawae typically have a forward flange carved with human figures, one on top of the other. And sometimes the flat surfaces to the outer sides of the flange are also carved, usuaslly with spiral motifs” “Carved wooden whakawae (door Jamb) section, the early 19th century architectural piece carved with three conjoined ancestral figures with naturalistic bodies and wheku faces mounted on an intricately carved support with side profile wheku heads and takarangi double spirals with pakati detailing. Northland, 78 cm length., 78 cm length.” Tenoned ends. Add.9455vol7_p2074. Size: 53.5” (135.9cm) and 54.5”H (138.4cm).
