Lot 93F
Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, Guatemala, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 850 CE. Large and exceptional pottery incensario used in ceremonies to communicate with the heavens. This vessel features the god Chac wearing a peccary headdress. Chac was god of rain and with his lightning axe, Chaac strikes the clouds and produces thunder and rain. The peccary was an important symbol of Mayan mythology and represented the earth as well as one of the signs of the Mayan zodiak. A vessel such as this burned copal, an early form of amber that has not quite fossilize and was certainly intended to bring rains from the heavens. Such an incredible example of Mayan art! Size: 11" W x 19" H (27.9 cm x 48.3 cm)
