Pre-Columbian, Maya Culture, Maya Heartland, Late Classic Period, ca. 600-900 CE. Carved from a single piece of stone, depicting the head of a Maya Deity; with wide lips, thick nostrils and lidded eyes, wearing a close-fitting head covering, and having a wide flange for insertion at the back. A highly unusual feature of this piece is that the surface was originally completely covered with red cinnabar or hematite paint, and most of it remains (red was the color of blood, and of life). A powerful sculpture of a Maya deity with unusual red coloration and almost negroid features. Size: 6-1/2"H x 3-1/2"W x 4-1/2" deep.

Provenance: Ex-private Los Angeles, CA collection, ex-private Santa Fe, Collection acquired from Ron Messick Fine Arts, Santa Fe.
