Description:

Gulf Coast region of Southern Veracruz & Tabasco. Middle Preclassic, ca. 900 - 600 B.C. Exceptional carved black obsidian standing figure portraying the Rain god depicted with muscular legs and arms and long-fingered hands. He wears a large seashell on his back and a tightly fitted cap. The figure's forehead is decorated with scroliate and linear flame brows, having gentle conical whorls incised with scrolls at each side. His face is dominated by deeply carved eye sockets and framed by dramatically projecting cheek bones, which form a ledge under both eyes, with a flattened nose showing tiny drilled nostrils above the snarling fanged buccal mask. Each cheek is incised with symmetrically opposed T-shapes indicative of a cave mouth, the full lower lip pulled tautly downward. Wearing a loosely hung cape over the rounded shoulders. Drilled perforated ear lobes. His head has been reattached with some minor filler along the break line. A chip on the top rear right of his head, and some scattered minor surface chips. Exceptional ancient surface patina. A truly remarkable, very rare example, especially being carved from a large obsidian block. Size: 7-3/4"H. x 4"W.

Provenance: Estate of Alphonse Jax, NYC. To family by descent.
