Description:

Lambayeque Valley, North coast, ca. 800 - 1200 CE. A large royal silvered sheet copper mummy mask having large drop shaped eyes with applied button pupils and silver bead eyes with extended sliver dangles (tear drops), relief nose of separate construction, with two dangles extending from beneath nose, a large dangler on each ear, and large flat dish ear ornaments with beaded borders. Tip of crown depict profile old deity heads wearing multitiered crescent form headdresses. Red painted pigment on the face. Custom bronze base. This is an exceptional example both in terms of size and quality. Size: 16.5”H x 27.25”W (41.9 x 69.2cm).

Provenance: Private NYC. collection; Ex. Edward H. Merrin Gallery, Inc., NYC., acquired 1960’s. Purportedly from the Duke Marks collection.

  • Condition: A few scattered remaining gilt surface highlights. Overall areas of green verdigris patina, perforation holes throughout, probably for attachment. Some scattered imperfections, the old deity heads have been repaired and reattached, loss to some of the danglers.
