Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes, ca. 1100 to 1450 CE. A large and finely painted polychrome ceramic bowl, hand-built with a hemispherical form and boldly decorated both inside and out. The interior is adorned with a striking pattern of interlocking spirals and stepped triangles, painted in black on a creamy slip. The exterior features a continuous frieze of broad, sinuous bands in red and black, punctuated by swirling scrolls that wrap elegantly around the vessel's circumference. The effect is dynamic, suggesting movement and flow, and demonstrating the Casas Grandes mastery of abstract design. Bowls of this type were produced in the Casas Grandes region of Chihuahua, centered at the site of Paquime, one of the most important cultural centers of prehistoric northern Mexico. The pottery is celebrated for its bold geometric designs, executed with precision and often carrying symbolic associations with water, fertility, or the natural and cosmological cycles essential to desert life. Size: 10.5" Diameter x 5" H (26.7 cm x 12.7 cm)

Vessels like this were used for both domestic and ceremonial purposes and were often placed as offerings in burials, underscoring their ritual significance. The swirling motifs on this example reflect the distinctive iconography of Casas Grandes ceramics, which often combined linear geometry with spirals, birds, or serpentine forms. The bold red and black pigments remain vivid against the light background, and the overall harmony of design exemplifies the sophistication of Casas Grandes artisans at their peak.
