Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu Culture, ca. 13th to 15th century CE. A large woven cotton textile decorated with rows of stylized anthropomorphic figures rendered in dyed camelid fiber. Each figure presents an angular body, triangular headdress, and outstretched arms, created in vivid shades of red, ochre, and blue-green using a discontinuous supplementary weft technique that produces a slightly raised, textured design. Likely once part of a funerary mantle or garment, the textile exemplifies the Chancay mastery of color and geometric abstraction in ritual weaving traditions. Size: 69.5" L x 26" W (176.5 cm x 66 cm)

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; ex-Yossef Maiman collection, Herzilya, Israel, before 2003; ex-Kemper collection, Switzerland, from the 1940s - 1980s, donated to The Museum of Islamic Art, Jerusalem, Israel, 1970s
