Description:

Egypt, early Ptolemaic Period, ca. 4th century BCE. The upper part of a faience votive statue of Taweret. Taweret, "The Great Female One", is a blend of hippopotamus, crocodile, and human features. Those two animals are some of the fiercest known to the ancient Egyptians from the Nile Delta, and the goddess is a fierce protector of pregnant and nursing women, called upon to protect women in childbirth. This example is particularly detailed and a rare deep forest green. She holds what looks like an ankh before her knees. Size: 1.55" W x 3.7" H (3.9 cm x 9.4 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-private Knoxville, Tennessee, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s
