Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, ca. 500 to 900 CE. A stunning example of Mayan jadework, carved on one side with a sitting or kneeling figure who wears an elaborate headdress, round earspools, and a beaded pectoral. The jade boasts breathtaking pale green hues with milky white occlusions and is laterally perforated for attachment. This piece is particularly impressive for its elaborate carving which demonstrates the artisan's extraordinary command of this difficult to carve stone. What's more, the composition is somewhat unique, for the figure is not presented in the usual symmetrical arrangement. Instead as the Mayans had a knack for working with the given shape of a stone, this artist presented the figure's head cocked a tad toward the right and in order to present the full length of the body, elected to depict him in a kneeling pose. A masterful demonstration of complex, incised figurative work that creates the impression of a three-dimensional image on a relatively compact, flat surface. A truly stupendous example!
