Lot 106
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 1st century BCE to 3rd century CE. A large and dramatic pottery female figure from the ancient Jalisco culture, masterfully hand-built and vividly burnished in hues of deep red and cream. Measuring 17.75 inches high (31.8 cm) and posed upright on thick bent legs, her voluminous torso is accentuated by applied nodular elements across the shoulders - possibly representing ritual scarification, textiles, or symbolic adornment. Her high domed headdress, sharply pointed nose, open mouth with visible teeth, and piercing eyes convey a sense of ritual authority or watchfulness. Size: 12.5" W x 17.75" H (31.8 cm x 45.1 cm)
