Description:

Roman Empire, western Europe, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. Commanding in presence and rich in imperial symbolism, this finely cast Roman bronze eagle stands as a powerful emblem of authority, divinity, and military might. Executed in high relief with elegantly incised plumage and naturalistic modeling, the eagle is depicted perched in a vigilant pose, head turned assertively to one side and beak poised, conveying both nobility and latent power. What sets this piece apart is its crisp line work, especially visible in the layered feather treatment across the wings and chest, as well as its striking presence—capturing the essence of Roman craftsmanship and ideology in a single form. With its dark green patina and superb preservation, the sculpture evokes the grandeur of Rome at its imperial height. Size: 1.75" W x 2.875" H (4.4 cm x 7.3 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.

The eagle (aquila) held unparalleled significance in Roman iconography. It was the sacred emblem of Jupiter, king of the gods, and the standard of the Roman legion, carried into battle by the elite aquilifer. To lose such a standard was unthinkable; to bear it was an honor of the highest order. This example likely once adorned a military standard, ceremonial fixture, or imperial monument, serving not only as a symbol of Rome’s divine sanction but also its global dominion and martial discipline.

This bronze has been tested using XRF technology and has been found to be made of elements consistent with bronzes from the Roman era.
