Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Sican/Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1370 CE. A huge gilded copper crown section, decorated with round discs that flash and dangle, linked to the crown by single small loops through the copper face. The crown appears to have had a large disc projecting from its upper portion that is now lost. This crown was made to adorn the body of a deceased elite member of the Sican society - gold was for lords, silver for noble women, and copper for wealthy commoners. The gilding would have been designed to emulate the crown of a lord, with the deceased and his family engaging in social climbing even after death! Size: 26.25" W (if fully stretched out) x 8.2" H (66.7 cm x 20.8 cm)
