Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Southern Ecuador to Northern Chile, Inca Empire, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. Perhaps the most recognizable form of pottery produced by the Inca, and most likely crafted by captured Chimu potters, this water jar was crafted in blackware terracotta and features a pointed bottom, two side loop handles, a highly-burnished ovoid body which tapers to a narrow cylindrical neck, a narrow mouth, and a wide flared rim with two nub-shaped additions. A small raised an incised addition can be seen near the top of the body and serves only as decoration. Custom museum-quality stand included. Size: 4.25" L x 5.75" W x 7" H (10.8 cm x 14.6 cm x 17.8 cm); 9" H (22.9 cm) on stand.

The term aryballos, though used to describe different forms of Pre-Columbian water-carrying jars and jugs, originated in ancient Greece and was used to describe small globular vessels which normally held either water or other various forms of liquids common in daily life.
