Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Inca, ca. 1438 to 1533 CE. A classic Inca hand-built and highly decorated polychrome vessel that is truly FABULOUS! The rounded body is finely painted with a wide register that features six standing figures - three on each side - all facing forward with their arms outstretched to hold weavings between them. Each figure presents a wide-eyed expression with a toothy smile and a short bobbed coiffure. All wear identical garments with shawls over long skirts. All is delineated in red, black, and white on a cream ground. Above the figures is a double linear border and below a border of nested, alternating black and cream triangles. The handle presents a textile-inspired design (perhaps alluding to the weavings presented by the figures on the vessel body) that is comprised of striations and X motifs in black on a russet red ground. Opposite is a jaguar finial in high relief. Size: 8" W (handle to jaguar) x 3.875" H (20.3 cm x 9.8 cm)

The wild feline looks out with bulging eyes, a prominent snout, pointed ears, and an open mouth bearing sharp fangs. There is a partial perforation at the front of the jaguar's toothy grin, perhaps to hold incense or an ornament. The jaguar symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. A striking vessel replete with strong technique, attractive form, and layers of symbolic meaning.
