Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Inca, ca. 1438 to 1533 CE. A beautiful polychrome aryballoid vessel with a flared mouth as well as a pouring spout emerging from the shoulder and joined to the rim. The painted iconographic program reveals the maker's cleverness, as two large aryballoi - mirroring the form of the vessel itself - are situated between three standing figures dressed in traditional garments. In addition to this iconography, the vessel presents an attractive decorative program with registers of textile-inspired geometric motifs above and below the figures, thick striations adorning the pouring spout, four trios of linear bands adorning the bridge joining the pouring to filler spout, and a single linear band around the rim. A fabulous example of Inca artistry! Size: 4.5" W at widest x 4.125" H (11.4 cm x 10.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Leonard Lyle Dees collection, Topeka, Kansas, USA, acquired between 1950 and 1970
