Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. A lovely textile coca bag comprised of tightly-woven natural cotton fibers in hues of citrine, cobalt-blue, cream, and sage. The rectangular panel features dozens of horizontal stripes on the body, and two opposite corners each display a red-and-yellow tassel with a frilled tip. Cloths like this example were used by the Inca to construct coca bags for transporting and storing coca leaves, and many have been discovered in sacred offering sites of the Andes. Mounted on black museum-quality fabric. Size (textile): 16.75" W x 16.5" H (42.5 cm x 41.9 cm); size (fabric backing): 25.25" W x 25.25" H (64.1 cm x 64.1 cm).
