Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Inca culture, ca. 1200 to 1400 CE. A lovely hand-built and highly burnished redware stirrup vessel - its form with four cacao pods connected via tubular passageways and an arching stirrup-shaped handle leading to a tubular spout. Each of the cacao pods is finely decorated with a negative resist band of striations superimposed by a register of repeated spiral motifs. Cacao was the source for chocolate which was believed to have medicinal value as well as aphrodisiac qualities in ancient Mesoamerica, and it played a major role in ceremonial rituals ranging from marriage to funerary rites. A lovely example. Size: 5" W x 7.75" H (12.7 cm x 19.7 cm)
