Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca, ca. 1400 to 1532 CE A beautiful stone mace head of a six-pointed star form made to be attached to a solid shaft used to bludgeon one's adversaries, or perhaps as a decorative helmet ornament to highlight the warrior's ferocity. In addition to being an extremely lethal weapon designed for destruction, the star form attests to the ancients' reverence for the celestial realm. An example like this one was probably a symbol of authority rather than an instrument of war. Size: 3.25" W (8.3 cm)

Provenance: private Colgate, Wisconsin, USA collection acquired 1970s to 1990s; ex John Montovan collection, Dekalb, Illinois USA
