Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Andes, Inca Empire, ca. 1400 to 1530 CE. A wooden kero of handsome presence, its dark surface alive with the rhythm of incised geometry that once animated the highland courtly world. Fashioned from a single piece of wood and burnished to a soft sheen through centuries of handling, the vessel swells gently at the body before narrowing to a modest foot, its silhouette recalling the elegant taper of classical Inca drinking cups used in the exchange of chicha during diplomatic feasts and ritual ceremony. A dense tapestry of line work encircles the surface: nested diamonds, stepped panels, crosshatched grids, and angled chevrons interlock with deliberate order. These motifs echo the visual syntax found across Inca imperial textiles and architecture, where abstract geometry communicated hierarchy, identity, and sacred order. Size: 4.4" Diameter x 5.6" H (11.2 cm x 14.2 cm)

The Incas regarded kero cups as potent instruments of alliance, their paired use binding participants in an act of shared consumption that affirmed loyalty to the state and to the living and ancestral spirits who presided over such gatherings. A rich, nearly black patina speaks to both age and prolonged ritual use, while the crisp incision of the designs preserves the deliberate precision of the artisan who carved them. This vessel stands as a compelling testament to the Inca's mastery of abstraction and their belief that objects, when beautifully made, could participate in the shaping of social and cosmic harmony.
