Description:

**Originally Listed At $300**

South Asia, Western India, Rajasthan region, ca. mid-20th century CE. A brass circular devotional box featuring a vibrant gouache painting of Shrinathji, a manifestation of Krishna, set under glass. The painting is adorned with dozens of tiny pearls meticulously adhered to the surface, forming intricate details such as necklaces, parts of the headdress, and arm bands. Three tiny cabochon stones, possibly rubies, are set into the necklace strands, adding a touch of brilliance. This type of box was used by Vaishnava worshipers as a portable shrine, sometimes referred to as a pocket temple or gatta ji. The lid is likely a replacement, which is not uncommon, as the original lids often indent and warp with age and use. The careful preservation and lavish ornamentation of Shrinathji reflect the reverence and significance these boxes held. Size when shut: 4.5" Diameter x 1.5" W (11.4 cm x 3.8 cm)
