Description:

India, ca. late 19th to early 20th century. Cast brass horse and rider grouping. The rider is cast separately and straddles the broad back, his bowed legs securing him to the horse. He holds a club in his raised right hand, and has a long beard, wearing a headdress with a decorated headband, double strand pendant necklace, arm bands and bracelets. The horse is adorned with finely delineated reins, saddle, and bridle.

Equestrian figures of this type are deeply embedded in the devotional and courtly traditions of India, where the horse symbolizes royal power, divine favor, and martial valor. Such figures were produced both as votive offerings at rural shrines — particularly associated with warrior hero cults — and as prestige objects for aristocratic households. Size: 11.125”H x 10.5”L (28.3 x 26.7cm).

Provenance: With copy of receipt from Nateson’s Antiqarts, January 22, 2008.
