South Asia, India, ca. mid-20th century CE. A brass cast sculpture of Shiva Nataraja, "Lord of the Dance," shown in his cosmic dance as creator and destroyer of the universe. Shiva balances with the left leg extended while the right foot presses down a prone, defeated figure symbolizing the illusions that obstruct transcendence, set upon a lotus pedestal. Behind his head, serpents flare outward like a radiant halo, and the deity is enclosed by a circular prabha mandala of flames crowned by a fierce kirtimukha face at the apex. Such portable images were made for festivals and home shrines, intended to be carried in procession and to bring the presence of the deity into intimate devotional spaces.
