Description:

Kerala, South India, ca. 18th–19th century CE. A finely cast brass figure depicting a standing male with a prominent bird-like beak, likely representing a character from South Indian temple performance traditions such as Theyyam or Kathakali, or a local folk deity. The figure stands upright on a modern display base, hands clasped at the waist, nude with exposed male genitalia. The surface shows a naturally aged patina with light encrustations, attesting to age and handling. The avian facial form may reference Garuda, the mythical mount of Vishnu, or a regional protective spirit associated with fertility and the natural world, as seen in certain ritual bronzes from Kerala. Remains of original red pigment behind left ear. Size: 8.5" H (21.6 cm); 9" H (22.9 cm) on included custom stand.
