Description:

**First Time At Auction**

South Asia, Northern India / West Bengal, Shunga Empire Period, ca. 2nd to 1st century BCE. This mold-made terracotta plaque depicts a Yakshi, a feminine nature spirit associated with trees and fertility. As a symbol of abundance and prosperity, she is portrayed with a voluptuous form, particularly emphasized in her hips and stance. She stands facing forward, one hand resting on her hip to accentuate her slender waist and full breasts. She wears a tightly fitted, diaphanous garment that clings to her body, with a cleft exposing her genitals, and is adorned with abundant jewelry, an elaborate headdress, and an intricate coiffure. One arm is raised, delicately holding a lotus stem, while other lotus bloom appears at her feet. A hole is pierced through the top of the plaque, likely for suspension. Size: 8.5" L x 1" W x 13.25" H (21.6 cm x 2.5 cm x 33.7 cm)
