Lot 10A
Oceania, Melanesia, Indonesia, West Papua, Geelvink Bay, ca. mid-20th century CE. A beaded woman's dance apron woven from bark fiber netting strung with seed beads in geometric diamond grids of black, white, yellow, red, green, and blue. The netting is secured at the top edge to a rope cord, allowing it to be tied around the waist, while red cotton trade cloth tassels accent the bottom edge. These aprons were traditionally worn in ritual and bridal contexts and maintained through time by periodic repairs - typically rebeaded every 30 to 40 years using original 19th-century beads, while replacing worn or fraying bark fiber netting. . Professionally mounted on a cloth covered wood frame and ready to display. Size of apron: 23" L x 21" W (58.4 cm x 53.3 cm); cloth backing: 28.5" L x 24" W (72.4 cm x 61 cm)
