A hand carved and painted wood mask depicting a character for the Topeng dance of Indonesia in which costumed dancers don expressive masks while they perform traditional stories about mythical kings and legendary heroes. The Topeng dance originated in the 17th century, and the word "topeng" literally means mask in Indonesian. This example depicts a human visage with a rather happy expression comprised of a peachy complexion, wide open eyes, an aquiline nose, a toothy smile, and meticulously incised wavy black hair adorned at the center with an elegant gold ornament. Size: 5.5" W x 7.5" H (14 cm x 19 cm)
