Lot 39
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, West Sumatra, Mentawai Islands, Siberut Island, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A long, slender club carved from a single piece of wood, featuring a rounded, bulbous head and, at the opposite end, a forked, slightly curved tip. This distinctive terminal intriguingly resembles a cloven hoof, complete with two small protrusions evocative of an deer's dewclaws. Known locally as a Tutuddu, this versatile implement was traditionally employed for hunting and fishing rather than warfare, though larger counterparts may have been used by shamans to beat rhythms on drums during trance ceremonies. The shaft is adorned with fine notches encircling the handle, and its surface exhibits a rich, well-aged patina from decades of handling. Size: 32" L x 2.5" W (81.3 cm x 6.4 cm); 13.25" H (33.7 cm) on included custom stand.
