Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. mid-20th century CE. A relief carved wooden frieze panel depicting a lively mythological scene, most likely drawn from Hindu epics such as the Ramayana or Mahabharata. The intricate composition features a dynamic chariot drawn by two horses, racing toward a central figure standing in a lush jungle landscape. To one side, another rider appears mounted on horseback, while at the opposite end a striking figure with the head and wings of Garuda, the legendary bird-mount of Vishnu, emerges with outstretched arms. Richly layered foliage, detailed costumes, and expressive faces bring movement and drama to the tableau, suggesting a divine or heroic confrontation. A nice decorative piece that embodies the storytelling traditions of Southeast Asian Hindu culture. Size: 39.5" L x 12.25" W (100.3 cm x 31.1 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010
