Description:

Mojeno Daro, India. Mature Harappan period, ca. 2800 - 2500 B.C. Square burnt steatite stamp seal inscribed with a profile of a bull, with a fish under his raised head, a circular and a v-shape element above, possibly an Indus script inscription, partly syllabic, partly transitional form of writing. Perforated lug on top center. Encrusted top surface, Intact, exc. cond. A nice example. Stamp seals were used in antiquity as marks of ownership and badges of status. In the large urban centers of the Harappan civilization, square-shaped stamp seals were found in excavations. They are engraved with images of wild or domestic animals, humans, fantastic creatures, and possibly divinities. Most of the square stamp seals have inscriptions along the top edge. The Indus script, invented around 2600 B.C., is yet to be fully deciphered. Size: 1" x 1".
