Description:

North America, Pacific Northwest, probably Alaska, fossilized mammoth, ca. 35000 to 15000 BCE. Very interesting sculpture! Fossilized mammoth tusk once used by the Inuit of the Pacific Northwest as an axe or adze - as evidenced by the deep black depression in the reverse near the butt. Later repurposed as an object of art by flattening one surface and carving a series of 5 ivory walruses. Each in fine detail. We believe the walruses are probably walrus tusk but are quite confident the large tusk is mammoth based on the exterior bark and wear patterns at the tip. Size: 18" L x 2.75" W (45.7 cm x 7 cm)
