Description:

Native American / First Nations, Northwestern United States, Alaska, or Canada, Inuit culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A traditional Inuit harpoon spear crafted from cedarwood with a walrus ivory foreshaft, bound tightly with sinew cord. The slotted ivory element is securely fitted into a notched wooden shaft and fastened with sinew wrapping, reinforced by two iron slot-head screws - suggesting a more modern adaptation. As the foreshaft is fixed rather than detachable, this example was likely intended for thrusting rather than throwing. With a nicely weathered patina, the piece likely dates to within the last 125 years. Its exact use history remains uncertain, but the craftsmanship reflects enduring cultural knowledge and tool-making traditions. Size: 78.5" L x 2" W (199.4 cm x 5.1 cm)
