Native American, United States, Alaska, Inupiaq, ca. 1999 CE. A walrus ivory carving of a sled dog team, attached with cotton threads, running along a thick piece of baculum bone. The underside has a ink signature of the artist, Fred Pushruk, an Inupiaq carver from Teller, Alaska. Size: 13" L x 1.75" W x 4" H (33 cm x 4.4 cm x 10.2 cm)
This item is made of or contains walrus ivory. Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) and the Endangered Species Act (ESA), Alaska Natives are permitted to harvest marine mammals for subsistence purposes and to create and sell authentic Native handicrafts, which may include materials such as whale and walrus ivory. This piece qualifies as an ESA-exempt item. Due to strict federal and state regulations concerning the sale and transport of ivory, this item cannot be shipped internationally or to residents of the following U.S. states: California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Washington. - Condition: Repaired, breakline and small loss to bar on the front of sled. Missing the foot on leader dog. Two dogs are loose and not attached to bone base. Thread is torn. All pieces reattached with adhesive to the bone base.
