Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A luminous Roman glass flask, blown in translucent pale green glass, its piriform body tapering elegantly to a narrow base and rising into a tall, flaring neck. The vessel is ornamented with a band of applied turquoise-blue glass dots, their glossy surface standing out against the soft iridescence that now dances across the body. The flask survives with a breathtaking play of color from centuries of weathering, the surface shimmering in hues of violet, silver, and gold. This radiant iridescence, unique to ancient glass long buried in the earth, transforms the vessel into a jewel-like object, enhancing its appeal far beyond its original function. Likely an unguentarium used to hold perfumed oils or cosmetics, the flask would have served an intimate role in Roman daily life. Its graceful form and jewel-toned decoration demonstrate the refinement of Roman glassblowing, while its surface patina adds a natural artistry created only by time. Size: 3.1" Diameter x 7.3" H (7.9 cm x 18.5 cm)

Such vessels remind us that beauty in antiquity often comes not only from human craftsmanship but also from nature's slow hand over the ages.
