Lot 33
**Originally Listed At $500**
Northwestern Europe, Medieval period, ca. 10th to 14th century CE. A large iron fitting, likely a drive shoe used in bridge or foundation piling, featuring a thick conical tip designed to penetrate soil or soft substrates. The object has a pair of robust iron flange panels with remnants of bolt holes or fastenings on one end, indicating it was once secured to the base of a timber pile. These flanges would have helped anchor the shoe firmly to the wooden shaft, distributing impact force during pile driving. The conical point suggests it was intended to facilitate driving the pile into the ground while preventing the timber from splitting. This artifact is consistent with medieval to early modern construction techniques used in bridgework or building foundations in wet or unstable ground. Size: 23.25" L x 7" W (59.1 cm x 17.8 cm)
Provenance: private Owen collection, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA, acquired in the 1990s from a US-based dealer
