Isabel Chiara (Spanish, d. 2022). "Once There Was an Elephant" mixed media collage on canvas, n.d. Signed and titled on verso. A wonderful mixed media collage by Spanish artist Isabel Chiara featuring an off-center, abstract visage of an elephant with huge ears, a raised trunk and prominent white tusks delineated in brilliant hues of scarlet, lapis, violet, and persimmon. The beige and mocha-toned background is adorned with a collage of text and images including readings on mammals and elephants and illustrations from manuscripts, books, and newspapers, one of which appears to be from an Ottoman or Persian manuscript in the lower right. Chiara described her art saying: "Humor is a defining aspect of my work, it helps me express my perception of the world, the problems that concern me as a woman and artist, and makes bearable those things against which I rebel against." Size: 40" W x 48.25" H (101.6 cm x 122.6 cm)
About the artist: "Isabel Chiara is a collage and gifs artist based in Spain. Originally from Sevilla, she studied Illustration and Graphic Design at The Art Institute Sevilla.
She has worked as a freelance journalist, creative assistant, media planner, production designer and 2D animation for different companies. Her background in plastic arts led Isabel to collage, which came to be her favorite way of artistic expression.
Isabel Chiara's style is very much influenced by great masters of painting. But the art she creates transcends their time. It tells us a story that reminds us that beauty exists and is real." (source: Artsper)
Artist statement: "Humor is a defining aspect of my work, it helps me express my perception of the world, the problems that concern me as a woman and artist, and makes bearable those things against which i rebel against. One of the most recurrent themes of my work is to show women, and their unrecognised place in this world, on the political and social stage, and the scene of his own body. The human body is both a suggestive machine in its parts and movements identical in each of us, yet unsettling in its external adaptability, resiliance and individual and social transfiguration. These are the aspects that most interest me, as they give me ideas as to how to play with images of our bodies according to any criteria, established or not.
Displacement and confusion: that is the idea. I like to think of collage and gif as a means of allowing one to blur reality. The collage provided me a straight answer for what I was searching inside of me. Years ago I had worked with other means but I felt like I had absolutely no way to express myself. The collage is a direct reflection of my thinking, my inner monologue." (source: artist's page on Saatchi Art)
