Description:

Middle East, ca. 8th - 12th century CE. Rich emerald-green blown glass vial, of tapered rectangular form, with four wheel-cut integral legs. Body is decorated with four cut long tapered vertical panels with geometric decoration. Tapered neck with a raised band of simple geometric decoration. Some scattered iridescence on the surface. A nice example. Homemade lucite block base.

Islamic cut glass of this period represents one of the great achievements of medieval luxury production — the molar flask type in particular is among the rarest and most technically demanding forms, requiring both accomplished free-blowing and precise cold-working to achieve the crisp cut panels and integral legs. The emerald green color — achieved through the addition of copper or iron oxide to the glass batch — is among the most prized in the Islamic glass corpus. Size: 4.375”H x 1.25”W (11.1 x 3.2cm).

Provenance: Private NYC. collection, acquired from Fortuna Fine Arts, about 2015.
