Tommaso Mocenigo was doge of Venice until his death in 1423. He was elected doge in 1414 while he was in Cremona as the Venetian ambassador, and had to flee in secret to avoid being held prisoner by the ruler of that city. During his reign, he conquered several towns in the north of Italy, securing them for Venice. At home, he reconstructed the ducal palace and began the creation of the library within the palace that can still be seen today. The Venetian ducat is one of the most famous and important coins of the Renaissance period, reflecting the dominance of Venice in the world of trade.
