J. Frank (American, XX-XXI). Two angels with stars. Paint on scrap metal, 1999. Signed and dated at lower right. Rendered in thick ivory strokes on a rusted panel of scrap metal, this spiritual scene by outsider artist J. Frank conjures the warmth and reverence of folk devotional imagery. Two simplified angelic figures, their halos glowing and robes billowing, raise their arms toward a constellation of five-pointed stars scattered across the top of the composition. The use of found material - here a corroded sheet of metal, partially oxidized and punctured by prior use - lends the piece a sense of resourcefulness and humble sanctity, qualities often celebrated in vernacular Southern art. Despite their naive outlines and faceless forms, the angels carry a strong presence. The larger figure's uplifted hand seems to gesture in praise or proclamation, while the smaller echoes the gesture in harmony.
