Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A red-burnished pottery figure from Jalisco, modeled in a seated position with arms folded and resting across bent knees. The figure wears an elaborate double-horned helmet painted with geometric motifs, along with layered necklaces, arm bands, and leg bands, details that emphasize his elevated social status. His face is characterized by the hallmark "coffee-bean" shaped eyes, prominent nose, and small slit mouth. Figures of this type were created to accompany the deceased in shaft tombs, serving as guardians or representations of ancestors. The crossed-arm posture is a common convention in West Mexican sculpture, conveying both formality and stability. The horned helmet suggests ritual or martial associations, while the painted ornaments further underline the figure's importance within his community. Size: 3.5" L x 5.5" W x 8.7" H (8.9 cm x 14 cm x 22.1 cm)

This expressive figure exemplifies the Jalisco tradition's focus on stylized anatomy and symbolic costume, contributing to the broader artistic vocabulary of West Mexican shaft tomb culture.
