Description:

**Originally Listed At $350**

Pre-Columbian, west Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Terracotta vessel depicting a seated female hunchback leaning forward with legs bent at the knees, diminutive arms, an oval face, large ear ornaments, and a crossed headband. The figure is painted red and cream and has a wide, round opening on her back. Hunchbacks make frequent appearances in the art of the shaft tomb cultures of West Mexico -- it seems that they were thought of as powerful, shamanic figures. This is a really nice example of a highly popular style! Interestingly, this figure is female not often seen with her breasts in an inaccurate location anatomically speaking. Size: (H)7.25" x (W)5.75" x (D)7.5"

Provenance: Collection of Y. Kayvan, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from a Los Angeles, California, USA gallery acquisition dates range from the late 1990s to 2005
