Description:

**Originally Listed At $300**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built terracotta effigy of a seated woman tenderly cradling a child - though the infant's head is now lost - capturing a timeless expression of maternal care and ancestral connection. Characteristic of the Jalisco tradition, the mother is rendered with an elongated head and stylized facial features, and earrings. The surface is burnished and slipped in rich red and buff hues, with traces of black concentric motifs created via a resist-wax technique - once vibrant, now gently softened by age. Figures like this were interred in the shaft tombs of West Mexico, often in groups that represented familial or social bonds, offering spiritual companionship to the deceased. This maternal effigy, in particular, evokes themes of fertility, continuity, and protection, embodying the vital link between generations and the enduring presence of the ancestors in the afterlife. Size: 5" W x 7.5" H (12.7 cm x 19 cm)
