Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Late Formative to Early Classic Period, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A robust and sensitively modeled terracotta female figure, shown seated with legs splayed and arms bent forward. Her exaggerated breasts are bare and boldly projected, each adorned with faint remnants of negative resist spiral motifs. Such spirals may have had symbolic resonance related to fertility, life force, or ceremonial tattooing practices. Her shoulders are stippled with raised circular nodes, suggesting ritual scarification that marked social status, tribal identity, or religious devotion. The figure's expressive face is distinguished by a strong triangular nose, deeply set coffee-bean eyes, parted lips, and large earspools. Her hair is parted at center, tucked behind the ears, and wrapped in a high headband that supports a tumi-shaped headdress. The figure's surface retains warm hues of burnished ochre and buff, with elegant naturalistic modeling throughout the torso and limbs. Size: 4.8" L x 8.5" W x 10.8" H (12.2 cm x 21.6 cm x 27.4 cm)

Jalisco figures of this style were often placed in shaft tombs to accompany the dead in the afterlife, serving as protectors, companions, or offerings. This example's solemn dignity and ceremonial markings reflect deeply rooted cultural beliefs in bodily transformation and ancestral veneration.
