Description:

Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A striking bichrome, white-on-red, sheepface figure, sitting with his right leg folded beneath his upraised left leg, holding a child in the left hand and a rattle in the right. The figure's so-called sheep-face presents a protruding nose, pointed horn-like protrusions above the ears, ovoid eyes, and white face paint over the mouth - this visage topped by an elaborate headdress with a twisted and a plain band wrapped around the lower section and a protruding crest above. A rather unusual depiction, perhaps a shaman performing a ritualistic ceremony in honor of the child. Size: 5.125" W x 9.875" H (13 cm x 25.1 cm)

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
