Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A dramatic standing ceramic figure with both male and female characteristics, pointed ears, and a long nose that is often referred to as "sheepface" but which would have had a very different meaning to an ancient person in Jalisco who would not be familiar with sheep! The figure also wears a large headdress and earrings and holds something in one hand - perhaps an offering. This figure was made to guard the interior of a shaft tomb. Size: 5.4" W x 11.5" H (13.7 cm x 29.2 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966
