Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A commanding seated male figure from ancient Jalisco, modeled in terracotta with an arresting sense of presence and power. The figure sits upright with knees bent and spread apart, hands resting upon them in a pose of authority and ritual readiness. In his right hand, he grasps a long club that rests across his shoulder, while his left hand cradles a shallow bowl, perhaps used for offerings or ceremonial libations. The man is nude save for a headband, large disc earrings, and arm bands, his nudity emphasizing virility and divine potency. His erect phallus is prominently rendered, a common symbol of masculine fertility and life force within West Mexican sculpture. The surface of his shoulders is covered in raised stippling, representing ritual scarification - a mark of high status, courage, or initiation. Size: 8.9" L x 10" W x 21.5" H (22.6 cm x 25.4 cm x 54.6 cm)

His elongated face, narrow eyes, and strong nose evoke the stylized features of the Jalisco tradition, combining abstraction with a profound sense of humanity. Such figures were placed within shaft tombs as guardians, ancestors, or participants in the eternal rituals of the afterlife. This work embodies the Jalisco ideal of power tempered by solemn dignity, the form pulsing with spiritual vitality even in stillness.
