Description:

Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Jalisco culture, Late Formative to Early Classic period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE A terracotta figure standing on thick legs and short, projecting arms to his sides, his face featuring applied eyes, a broad nose, and slightly parted lips. The nose and ears are adorned with circular ornaments. A headdress with incised lines suggesting textile panels caps his head, while raised nodules along the shoulders and arms may signify ritual scarification or symbolic adornment. The surface is slipped in red with faint remains of a white pigment. Figures like this were likely used in funerary contexts, placed in shaft tombs to serve as companions, guardians, or representations of the deceased in the afterlife.
