Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jama-Coaque culture, ca. 240 BCE to 450 CE. A lively terracotta musician playing a finely modeled panpipe (antara), crowned by an expressive zoomorphic headdress and, remarkably, still functioning as a whistle. Mold made with extensive hand finishing, the figure stands on an integral ovoid base with a rear strut, grasping the multi-tubed instrument before pursed lips; details include stacked bracelets, earspools, a pendant, and a wrapped kilt. The towering headdress features a fanged creature with bulging eyes - perhaps bat or feline - signaling shamanic affiliation and the transformation themes prized on Ecuador's north coast. Warm buff slip and low relief carving accentuate the anatomy and ornaments, while an internal air chamber with mouthpiece and vents creates a bright, single tone when blown. Size: 3.5" L x 3.1" W x 5.6" H (8.9 cm x 7.9 cm x 14.2 cm)

Such sound-producing figures likely accompanied rites, dances, or feasts, their music animating processions; comparable musician whistles are held in the Museo Antropologico y de Arte Contemporaneo, Guayaquil. Still a working instrument and a compelling sculpture, it embodies Jama-Coaque artistry and the centrality of music in Pre-Columbian ritual life.
