Description:

Japan., ca. 19th century or earlier.. Cast bronze divine Nio guardian general figure, this dynamic figure was originally part of a set of twelve divine generals that stood in front of a Buddhist temple hall, protecting the central icon, the healing Buddha. Each general embodies a vow taken by Yakushi, to heal ailments of the mind and body. Responsible for protecting the faithful and vanquishing the enemies of Buddhism.

This figure is depicted with ferocious countenances, wearing armor, and standing in a fighting pose. In ancient times they became associated with the twelve animals of the zodiac. This general has a rabbit sitting on top of his head. Symbol of: longevity, peace, mercy, elegance, and prosperity. Worshippers who pass through the gate between these guardians symbolically acquire all knowledge. He stands on a cast bronze rock base. Some traces of the original gilt surface remain.

Traces of the original gilt surface remain, hinting at the breathtaking splendor this figure would have projected in its original temple setting. Worshippers who passed between these guardians were understood to symbolically acquire divine protection and wisdom.

The Twelve Heavenly Generals represent one of the most compelling intersections of Buddhist devotion, zodiacal cosmology, and martial imagery in East Asian sacred art. Size: 14.375”H x 7.5”W.
