East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, ca. 1603 to 1868 CE. A soldier's hat known as a jingasa constructed from several pliable wooden sheets that were draped over a domed mold and then covered in red and black lacquer. The front of the helmet displays an underlined, three-lobed emblem known as a mitsudomoe that is symbolic of Hachiman, the Shinto divinity of archery and war. The underside of the hat is covered in crimson-hued lacquer and sports a thick cloth head liner. Size: 13.875" L x 12.75" W x 5.375" H (35.2 cm x 32.4 cm x 13.7 cm)
